“Little house on the parie”, by Laura Ingalls

little-house-on-the-prairie

Set in the early 1900s, pioneering days, Laura’s family, yes all of them: Pa, Ma, Laura, Mary, baby Carrie and jack, are moving to Indian country, and it will be a long trip.Along their journey, they must cross a strong river that nearly kills their faithful dog jack, who manages to find them after they have found the prairie and are building their new home. They are constantly threatened by wolves, but as soon as that is fixed other problems spring up, with the chimney catching fire, some menacing Indians raiding their home, toxic air in the well, and fever’n'auge (or malaria, as we know today) gets the whole family and nearly kills them.

Then, a fire across the vast dry plain that should have killed them is the last thing they need but they manage to go on. But finally, they are forced to move out yet again because of the Indians land rights, so they move onto a new start and a whole new book.

‘Little house on the prairie’ is a nice quiet little book about what life was like back then, filled with the very real problems that were quite serious, though seemingly, the ‘norm’ for them.

It was a relaxing read that should be enjoyed and read leisurely, as there was no big climax in the book so it was more a book of interest than an action book, because as you came upon a problem, it wasn’t just ‘how were they going to get out of this one?’, but ‘how would they handle it without any of our modern-day stuff?’, and I liked the way they dealt with stuff, it was interesting.

I would recommend this to the class as a good, relaxing book, for maybe airplane flight or long trip because it was quite smooth and calm, being in third person, and there was never really any action in it, more of thinking about the choices or looking back at it, so if you want a relaxing read,  I highly reccomend “Little house on the prairie”.
